Welcome to FNQ Festival Cubano! North Queensland's premiere Cuban dance and music festival.
Taking place at amazing locations right across North Queensland this festival is the ultimate weekend of joy and connection through dance and music. FNQ Festival Cubano has a wonderful committee spanning across different towns in North Queensland. Festival Director Joanne Fairbairn (Strictly Street Salsa Cairns) has passionately developed the festival over the last ten years, with the help of dedicated volunteers. Joanne has brought a wealth of authentic Cuban dance and music experience to the wider North Queensland community over that time. In 2022 Joanne brought Cara Griffin (Global Dance Collective - Townsville) onto the committee ensuring a truly united North Queensland team. The festival strives to bring the very best instructors and musicians of Cuban Dance to explore the rich history, spirituality, musicality, dance and cultural bounty this incredible country has to offer.

Mauritian-born Christina studied with a principal artist of Cuba’s National Folkloric Dance Group in Sweden in 1996, beginning a journey that included participation in an intensive Afro-Cuban workshop held in Denmark and joining a dance troupe and dancing Afro-Cuban and Popular Cuban rhythms (salsa, cha cha cha, mambo, conga) all over Scandinavia.
She joined a cultural exchange program in Havana in 1998 where she studied AfroCuban dance, Yoruba spirituality and Santeria religion which led to her full initiation as a priestess of Santeria.

Kent Windress is a musician, scholar and educator who was the first Australian-born person to be initiated into the Afro-Cuban religion of Santería as a babalao. While travelling to Cuba in 2005 to study its percussion traditions, Kent was introduced to Santería and the world of the orichas and underwent a number of initiations over the following years. Since that time he has committed to studying not only the religious philosophy of Santería but also its associated musical tradition of batá drumming, and is also initiated into the fraternity of ceremonial batá drummers known as omo añá.
